How to improve your apparatus listing

Tips for creating listings that get more views, more inquiries, and higher bids on Garage.

Updated over 2 months ago

A strong listing can make all the difference between a truck that sells quickly and one that sits without much interest. Here are a few ways to make your listing stand out to buyers and increase visibility—especially in auctions, where good presentation can directly impact the number of bids.

1. Photos Are the #1 Factor

High-quality photos are the most important part of your listing. They give buyers confidence that the vehicle is well cared for and accurately represented.

General Photo Tips

  • Take photos outside. Natural light makes a huge difference—trucks photographed outdoors look sharper and more professional. Avoid taking photos inside the station when possible, and choose a background with minimal distractions (like your station building or a clean parking lot).

  • Wash your truck first. A clean truck always photographs better. Wipe down chrome, clean tires, and remove any visible dirt or grime.

  • Use good angles. The best cover shot shows the driver’s side and front corner of the vehicle. You can slightly kneel and shoot upward to capture the truck’s full size and stance.

  • Avoid grass or uneven ground. Photos taken on grass can make a truck look less maintained—flat pavement gives a better impression.

  • Remove clutter. Make sure nothing in the frame distracts from the vehicle—no cones, tools, or background equipment.

Required Photo Set

To make your listing stand out, include:

  • Cover photo: Driver’s side and front angle (on pavement).

  • Exterior photos: From all sides—both with compartments closed and again with them open.

  • Ladder trucks: Include at least one shot with the ladder raised.

  • Interior photos: Show the cab and controls clearly.

  • Mileage gauge: Take a clear, glare-free photo with the number visible.

  • Undercarriage: Include two photos (use flash for clarity).

Tip: Buyers often judge maintenance and care based on photo quality and setting. A clean, well-lit environment suggests the vehicle is in good condition.

2. Write a Strong Title

Your listing title is what buyers see first in search results. Include the most important details in this order:

Year + Make + Model + Category + Pump Size + Tank Size

Example: 2008 Pierce Contender Pumper – 1250 GPM / 1000 Gal

3. Always Include Mileage

Mileage is one of the top filters buyers use when browsing.
Make sure to fill out the mileage field accurately—this helps your listing appear in more search results.

4. Add Detail in the Description

Use the description to tell buyers what makes your truck unique and worth their attention. Be honest and specific:

  • Is the truck still in service or recently taken out?

  • Condition: Any rust? Maintenance records?

  • Functionality: Are all systems working (AC, pump, generator, etc.)?

  • Equipment: Does it come with hoses, ladders, radios, etc.?

A detailed, transparent description builds trust and reduces unnecessary buyer questions.

5. Include Pump and Tank Size

If your vehicle has a pump or tank, include the specifications in the designated fields. Buyers frequently search by these specs when narrowing down options.

Final Tip

Think of your listing as your truck’s first impression. A few extra minutes spent capturing great photos and writing detailed information can dramatically improve your results—whether you’re selling directly or through an auction.
