How max bids work

How automatic bidding works on Garage, plus our bid increments.

Every bid on Garage is a max bid. You enter the most you’re willing to pay, and we’ll bid for you automatically, only as much as it takes to keep you in the lead.

Already the top bidder? Raising your max updates your existing bid, so you won’t bid against yourself.

How it works

  • Auto bids: when someone outbids you, your bid is raised by one increment, up to your max.

  • You only pay what’s needed: if you win, you pay one increment above the next-highest bid, not your full max.

  • Your max stays private: other bidders and the seller never see it.

  • Raise it anytime: already the top bidder? Raising your max updates your existing bid, so you won’t bid against yourself.

Bid increments

The increment depends on the current price.

Current price

Increment

$0 – $100

$2

$101 – $1,000

$25

$1,001 – $10,000

$100

$10,001 – $20,000

$250

$20,001 – $50,000

$500

$50,001 – $100,000

$1,000

$100,001 and up

$2,500

Example: The current bid is $20,000, and you place a max bid of $25,000. Another bidder bids $21,000, so your bid is automatically raised to $21,500. If no one bids higher, you win at $21,500.
