Transferring a vehicle title

The title transfer is the final step in making the sale official. Here's how buyers and sellers can make the handoff quick and easy.

Before the sale

  • Sellers: have the title ready in your name or your organization's name. Buyers may ask to see a copy.

  • Buyers: ask the seller for a copy of the title, or confirmation of who holds it, so you know you can register the vehicle.

  • Both: agree on how the title will be handed off, so everything wraps up smoothly after delivery.

Two ways to hand off the title

  • In the vehicle: the seller signs the title and leaves it in the vehicle's glove compartment, so the buyer receives it at pickup or delivery.

  • By mail: the seller mails the signed title to the buyer separately.

Some states need signatures from the buyer, the seller or both, so check your state's requirements to ensure a smooth transfer.

Once the title arrives

  • Buyers: please confirm receipt on your purchase page. This helps us close out the purchase for everyone.

Can't find your title?

Request a duplicate from your state's DMV as soon as you notice it's missing, and let us know if it will take a while. We'll keep the buyer in the loop.
