How Freight Works — What Sellers Need to Know

A guide to what sellers can expect when freight is coordinated through Garage.

Updated over a month ago

🚚 How Freight Gets Started

Once your listing invoice and freight invoice are both fully paid, Garage gives the carrier the green light to begin arranging pickup. Until both invoices are paid, the carrier cannot reserve a driver or truck — so timely payment on the buyer's end is key to keeping things moving!

Once Garage confirms payment, the freight carrier will begin reserving resources and the driver will reach out to you directly to coordinate a pickup date and time.

📋 Your Responsibilities as a Seller

Your role in the freight process is straightforward — and it ends at loading!

  • Be available: If you're unavailable during the proposed pickup window, please let Garage know as soon as possible so we can reschedule with the carrier.

  • Loading: You are responsible for loading the apparatus onto the freight truck. In most cases, this simply means driving the vehicle onto a flatbed — no forklift or lifting equipment needed. Carriers handle transportation only and do not assist with loading.

  • Need help loading? If you don't have the means to load the vehicle, notify Garage as soon as possible and we'll work to find a solution.

⚠️ Important: Your responsibility for the apparatus ends once it is loaded and you have signed the Bill of Lading. After that point, please do not take any further action. When in doubt, contact Garage first!

📐 Make Sure Your Dimensions Are Accurate

This one is important! When listing your apparatus, please make sure the dimensions you provide — width, height, and length — are accurate. Certain dimensions require special permits or additional equipment to transport, and inaccurate information can cause delays or unexpected costs down the line.

📄 Bill of Lading (BOL)

The Bill of Lading is a standard shipping document that serves as both a receipt for the item and a contract between you (the shipper) and the carrier.

  • The BOL is issued at pickup and should be signed by you once the apparatus is loaded onto the truck.

  • By signing, you confirm that the vehicle was released to the carrier in the condition described.

  • Once signed, your responsibilities are complete — the carrier takes it from there!

⚠️ Things That Can Delay Freight

While Garage does everything we can to keep things on track, there are some factors outside of our control that can cause delays:

  • Inaccurate vehicle dimensions provided at listing — certain sizes require permits or special equipment that need to be arranged in advance.

  • Weather conditions — even if it's not in your area, weather impacts driver availability and overall freight capacity nationwide.

  • Route availability — some areas simply have fewer carriers servicing them, which can make scheduling more challenging.

We always do our best to help things run smoothly, and we appreciate your patience when the unexpected happens!

📣 A Note on Carriers

Garage coordinates with carriers and provides them with clear instructions — including not reaching out to coordinate pickup until payment has been received. However, carriers are independent operators and don't work directly for Garage. If you experience any issues with a carrier, please let us know right away and we'll step in to help!
