How Freight Works — What Buyers Need to Know

A guide to what buyers can expect when freight is coordinated through Garage.

Updated over a month ago

🚚 Getting a Freight Quote

You can use the Freight Quote tool on any listing page to get an approximate freight cost. This quote is generally accurate but may adjust slightly based on the vehicle's final confirmed dimensions and weight.

📋 How to Book Freight

When you're ready to move forward with freight, here's how the process works:

  1. Reach out to Garage to get started.

  2. A Garage team member will confirm the final freight cost and send you an invoice.

  3. Once both your listing invoice and freight invoice are fully paid, Garage gives the carrier the green light to begin arranging pickup and delivery.

⚠️ Important:

Until both invoices are paid and funds are received by Garage, the carrier cannot reserve a driver or truck. If you want pickup arranged as quickly as possible, here's what we recommend:

  • Communicate your payment timeline with Garage so we can plan accordingly.

  • Submit payment via wire transfer — this is the fastest method, typically clearing within 1 business day. ACH can take up to 4 business days.

  • Check in with the seller to make sure they'll be available for pickup once freight is confirmed!

📦 What Happens After Payment Clears

Once Garage receives and confirms your payment:

  • The carrier will begin reserving resources and coordinating pickup with the seller.

  • Once a pickup date is confirmed with the seller, Garage will notify you so you can plan to be on-site for delivery.

  • The driver will also give you a heads up a couple of hours before arrival so you're not caught off guard!

🏁 Your Responsibilities as a Buyer

  • Be available during the scheduled delivery window. If you're unavailable, please let Garage know in advance.

  • Unloading is your responsibility. In most cases, this simply means driving the vehicle off the flatbed — straightforward and easy!

  • If you foresee any challenges with unloading, let us know ahead of time and we'll do our best to help.

📄 Bill of Lading (BOL)

The Bill of Lading is a standard shipping document that serves as both a receipt for the item and a contract between the seller and the carrier.

  • At delivery, inspect the vehicle carefully before signing the BOL.

  • If you notice any damage, note it directly on the BOL before signing and report it to Garage immediately.

  • Your signature confirms the vehicle was received in the condition described — so take your time before signing!

The BOL helps protect you in case of any shipping issues or disputes.

⚠️ Things That Can Delay Freight

While Garage does everything we can to keep things on track, there are some factors outside of our control that can cause delays:

  • Inaccurate vehicle dimensions provided at listing — certain sizes require permits or special equipment that need to be arranged in advance.

  • Weather conditions — even if it's not in your area, weather impacts driver availability and overall freight capacity nationwide.

  • Route availability — some areas simply have fewer carriers servicing them, which can make scheduling more challenging.

We always do our best to help things run smoothly, and we appreciate your patience when the unexpected happens!

📣 A Note on Carriers

Garage coordinates with carriers and provides them with clear instructions throughout the process. However, carriers are independent operators and don't work directly for Garage. If you experience any issues with a carrier at any point, please let us know right away and we'll step in to help!
